誤った用語が疑問視される事なく使われ、適切な理解を妨げる事は珍しくなく、「キャスター」もその一つです。オートバイの機構の正しい理解には、適切な用語が欠かせません。

現在、日本の二輪業界では「キャスター」という言葉がよく使われてますが、実際のオートバイには「キャスター」らしき部品はありません。 また、専門誌のライターでさえ、「キャスター」という言葉で角度を表現させていますが、角度を表現するならばキャスター角とするべきで、適切な理解を求めるならば、「キャスター」という言葉の利用には慎重になるべきでしょう。

実際、自転車の世界では「ステアリング（回転）軸角」という表記が一般的で、その角度は路面からの角度を示していて、日本での「キャスター角」が鉛直方向からの角度としているのとは異なります。
また、自転車に限らず、欧州主要二輪メーカーでも、角度を示すための「キャスター角」という表現は無く、「ステアリング軸角度」や「ステアリングヘッド角度」として、路面からの角度で示されるのが一般的です。
以上の理由で、「キャスター角」ではなく「ステアリング回転軸角」と書く事にします。 また、角度の測定方法も、路面からの角度を「ステアリング回転軸角」とします。

The term "kingpin" has a long history, dating back to the days when horse-drawn carriages were widely used. It was the name of the most important "axis of rotation" in the mechanism that changed the direction of the front wheels of four-wheeled carriages.
At the end of the 19th century, When automobiles were born, they were taken over as the names of parts for the steering mechanism of the front wheels, but most of today's passenger cars in the 21st century have no parts that can be called "kingpins".
Therefore, it has been changed to the expression "steering axis" for a more appropriate understanding.
However, it is known that the old "Kingpin" still remains in some automobiles and is often used. It is a part that connects the trailer and the tractor, and it has exactly the same mechanism as the "Kingpin" in the era of carriages. |
