僕は、機械の設計者（本来の意味でのデザイナー）に関心があり、特に F1 車両で最先端技術を駆使するデザイナー達には常に注目している。 彼は、画像前方の男性、決して ドライバーではなく、ウィリアムズ や マクラーレン、そして レッドブル の各チームでタイトル獲得に寄与した Adrian Newey 氏で、特に レッドブルチームの隆盛を支えたのは 彼だと僕は思っている程に優れた人です。

ただ、フェラーリの ロス・ブラウン氏 や マクラーレン の ゴードン・マレー 氏の様に社交的でも無く目立つ事も好まない様子ですが、その作品は常に空気力学の応用で最先端を走り続けていたと思います。
時代は移り、個人の才覚で F1 車両をまとめ上げる時代は過ぎ去りつつあり、過去の偉大なデザイナーであり経営者であった、僕が尊敬する ロータスの コーリン・チャップマン 氏 の様な鬼才は必要とせず、設計と解析グループの総合力、特に AI 活用の設計で勝負がつく時代になりつつあります。

料理の話でデザイナーを語るならば、高級チェーンレストランやコンビニ弁当やファミリーレストランの料理が 不味いという訳ではありませんが、作った人の顔を見ながら食べる料理が美味しさの一番の決め手だと信じているので、作り手の “顔” が見える 車両 の方に心が強く惹かれてしまうのです。

以前なら、誰が考えたのか作ったのか判りやすい世の中だったけど、今では誰が作ったのか分からない事ばかりで、AI が自動的に操作している場面に出逢う機会も多くなっている程ですから、F1車両の設計で最も必要とされているのはデザイナーではなく優れたプログラマーになっているかも知れません。
「どんな人が考え作ったのか？」に興味が尽きない僕は、現在の流れから見れば時代遅れでしょうか。 いや、人間にとって真に大切で魅力的なモノは人間にしか出来ない筈だと信じているので、あのデザイナー達とは別な分野で、僕は人間らしい創作活動の最先端に残り続ける心意気で生き続けたいと考えています。




For more than 50 years now, I have been greatly interested in the design of Formula One racing cars. While there are many designers who only have the ability to copy and improve
on the successes of others, I have a strong admiration for those who have the ability to sublimate their designs, incorporating cutting-edge scientific knowledge and original ideas, into a form that outshines others on the race track.

Adrian Newey, shown in the image, is one such designer. He has helped Williams, McLaren, and Red Bull F1 teams win numerous titles, and it would not be an exaggeration to say that he has supported the rise of the Red Bull team in particular. However, I am sure that no outstanding designer like him will ever appear in the F1 world again. That's because I
think the days of their success have passed, such as colin Chapman, an innovative
designer and founder of Lotus, and Gordon Murray, who demonstrated ideas that no one else can imitate and the ability to make a finished car.

Today, more money is invested than in the past, and a group of high expertise shares
design and analysis, and in some cases, AI is used to design vehicles, so I don't think
there's a place for a prominent designer to be active. However, I believe that people with outstanding talent and enthusiasm are emerging outside of the F1 world, and I strongly hope to be that kind of person even though I am active in different places.
